Understanding Regulation
All approaches listed within this Explore & Research section relate to their use with animals.
In the UK, some services are legally restricted and may only be carried out by registered veterinary surgeons, delivered under veterinary referral, or operated under local authority licensing. Others are not statutorily regulated.
Where this applies, it is clearly indicated using the following key:
🩺 Professionally regulated. Legally restricted profession (e.g., veterinary surgeons, farriers) or protected professional act.
🏛️ Council licensed. Requires local authority licensing and inspection under UK animal welfare or environmental law.
🔁 Veterinary referral required. May only be delivered under referral or direction of a registered veterinary surgeon when treating injury, illness, or musculoskeletal conditions (Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966).
🌿 Not statutorily regulated. Not protected by specific legislation, though general welfare and consumer laws apply.
